STABL Energy is an innovative industry player with a patent pending technology that ensures cell quality of second-life batteries. In essence, old EV batteries are plugged together and used as C&I-scale behind-the-meter storage systems. In this current joint project, enspired’s services are employed in STABL Energy’s testing facility to substantiate cell quality while at the same time realizing a profit on wholesale markets.
STABL Energy develops energy storage systems from discarded electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The aim is to increase the use of renewable energies with the help of energy storage systems and to simultaneously extend the life cycle of car batteries. To reach this goal, the company is setting a new standard in battery storage design, safety, handling, reliability and cost efficiency with their innovative, integrable technology.
EV batteries that have lost their power to propel cars still hold value beyond their initial use. With STABL Energy's technology, the varying residual capacities of battery modules from electric cars can be harnessed to extend the lifespan of these used assets. Following a successful connection of storage facilities to the grid in Germany, a similar pilot was launched in Switzerland, where a residential neighborhood now benefits from 27 discarded KIA batteries with a rated capacity of 98 kWh, which were repurposed to serve as reinforcements for both EV self-consumption and grid support.

The use case
STABL Energy is in the process of building its first MW-scale BESS with second-life batteries from electric vehicles. While marketing new batteries is complex enough, quality checks are especially paramount for second-life batteries. STABL Energy’s patent pending control system combined with enspired’s proven optimization technology has been shown to commercially outperform new battery storage systems.
enspired is supporting STABL Energy with improved system layouts like c-rate and cycling requirements, allowing for a wide variety of possible field tests through wholesale market optimizations. Different configurations such as available capacity, SoC ranges or full cycle equivalents can be adjusted dynamically. The monitoring and utilization of asset data like thermal management is fully integrated into enspired’s optimization process, which delivers valuable insights and ensures adherence to warranty terms.
The environmental edge
There is an increasing global demand for battery storage systems, the rollout speeds of which heavily depend on the availability of raw materials and associated supply chains. While batteries in any form are of major significance for the transition to clean energy due to their power grid stabilization and emission saving properties, second-life batteries also contribute to the circular economy, which is important for satisfying global demand and further increasing the positive impact of battery installations.
